How Acupuncture Supports IVF and IUI
We will ask about your period in detail, its colour, how it flows, whether there is pain or clotting, because in Chinese medicine those details say a lot about the womb environment and shape treatment.
Acupuncture alongside IVF is also one of the most studied areas of fertility acupuncture, with two large systematic reviews examining outcomes around embryo transfer.
As to why acupuncture works alongside IVF, researchers point to several possible mechanisms:
- Supporting uterine blood flow: a study that scanned blood flow to the womb found acupuncture helped blood move through the uterine arteries more easily (Stener-Victorin et al., Human Reproduction, 1996). Systematic reviews have also reported higher clinical pregnancy rates when acupuncture was given around embryo transfer (Manheimer E, et al., BMJ, 2008; Xu Y, et al., Arch Gynecol Obstet, 2023).
- Supporting hormone regulation: acupuncture has been proposed to act on the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis, the feedback loop that governs your cycle (Anderson et al., 2007). A number of trials have looked at hormonal markers with varying results. Part of the difficulty is that acupuncture is genuinely hard to test: sham needling is not inert, so trials often compare one active treatment against another, and neither practitioner nor patient can be fully blinded.
- Support through a demanding process: that sustained demand keeps the nervous system in alert mode. Acupuncture is aimed at the parasympathetic “rest and restore” side of that system, and a meta-analysis of 9 randomised trials found it affected heart-rate variability and parasympathetic activity (Hamvas et al., 2023). Many patients tell us treatment is the one part of the cycle that feels calming rather than clinical.
- Works alongside your protocol: acupuncture complements your fertility team’s care, never replaces it. Tell us where you are in your cycle and we plan treatment around it.
- Calming the nervous system: sustained anxiety keeps the nervous system stuck in alert mode. Acupuncture is aimed at supporting the parasympathetic “rest and restore” side of that system, and a meta-analysis of 9 randomised trials found acupuncture affected heart-rate variability and parasympathetic activity, the measures used to track that shift (Hamvas et al., 2023).
- Acting on brain chemistry: research points to the release of endorphins, the body’s own feel-good chemicals, and has examined the brain regions handling pain and stress alongside

Acupuncture Articles
You don’t need to understand how acupuncture works for it to work. But if you’re curious about the science, we’ve linked some articles below, with more on Traditional Chinese Medicine in our Articles section.
Acupuncture can be difficult to study. Researchers use sham acupuncture as a control, with needles placed away from recognised acupuncture points, but these “fake” points can still have an effect. Many studies are also small because research funding is limited. This means some conditions have not yet been studied at the scale needed for firm conclusions. That is not the same as acupuncture being tested and failing.
Where high-quality, large-scale research has been carried out, the evidence is much stronger.
