Trying to conceive can be an emotional and sometimes overwhelming journey. Our approach to fertility acupuncture in our London clinics considers your overall wellbeing, recognising that sleep, stress, lifestyle and general health are all important parts of how you feel while preparing for pregnancy. We offer personalised acupuncture as a complementary option while you’re trying to conceive, working alongside the care and advice of your GP or fertility team.
Rather than focusing on reproductive health alone, we take time to understand the bigger picture and tailor treatment to your individual needs. Whether you’re preparing to conceive naturally or navigating fertility treatment, we offer a welcoming space where you can feel heard and supported.
Fertility is often a shared journey, which is why we welcome partners too. If you’re trying to conceive as a couple, we can discuss individual wellbeing and lifestyle factors for both partners, including sleep, stress and general health. We can also explore questions around male fertility and how acupuncture might fit into your wider approach to wellbeing.
At our Camberwell and Paddington clinics we offer support while you prepare to conceive, alongside the care of your GP or fertility team.

How Acupuncture Can Support Fertility
Acupuncture has been used to support fertility for centuries, and a full cycle history is where we start. Researchers point to several possible mechanisms of how acupuncture supports fertility:
-
- Supporting blood flow to the womb: a study found acupuncture helped blood move through the uterine arteries more easily (Stener-Victorin et al., Human Reproduction, 1996), and research has also found it enhanced local microcirculation (2010).
- Supporting hormone regulation: acupuncture has been proposed to act on the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis, the feedback loop governing your cycle (Anderson et al., 2007). Trials looking at hormonal markers have had varying results, partly because acupuncture is hard to test: sham needling is not inert, so trials often compare one active treatment against another, and neither practitioner nor patient can be fully blinded.
- Understanding your cycle: pulse and tongue diagnosis alongside a full cycle history, so you understand what your cycle is telling you rather than just tracking it. We will ask about your period in detail, its colour, how it flows, whether there is pain or clotting, because in Chinese medicine those details say a lot about the womb environment.
- Calming the nervous system: trying to conceive is stressful in itself, and stress keeps the nervous system in alert mode. Acupuncture is aimed at the parasympathetic “rest and restore” side of that system, and a meta-analysis of 9 randomised trials found it affected heart-rate variability and parasympathetic activity (Hamvas et al., 2023).
- Many patients tell us it is a valuable hour of calm: somewhere to manage the stress and sleep better while cycles and waiting carry on.
Individual results vary. These findings are not a guarantee of outcome for every patient.

Common Questions Answered
Not at all. Many people prefer to start before they begin trying, so there is time to look at diet, sleep, stress and your cycle without the pressure of a deadline. We work alongside your GP or fertility team throughout.
You’re not alone, and there’s a lot we can do. We help you understand what your cycle is doing naturally, not just track it.
The research on stress and fertility is mixed and still developing, and being told stress is a factor can itself feel stressful. What we can say is that many patients tell us treatment is a helpful way to manage how they feel through the process. Individual results vary.
Acupuncture works by building change slowly over time, small shifts that add up, rather than one big fix. Everyone is different, but most patients start to notice a difference after several regular sessions rather than a single visit.

Acupuncture Articles
You don’t need to understand how acupuncture works for it to work. But if you’re curious about the science, we’ve linked some articles below, with more on Traditional Chinese Medicine in our Articles section.
Acupuncture can be difficult to study. Researchers use sham acupuncture as a control, with needles placed away from recognised acupuncture points, but these “fake” points can still have an effect. Many studies are also small because research funding is limited. This means some conditions have not yet been studied at the scale needed for firm conclusions. That is not the same as acupuncture being tested and failing.
Where high-quality, large-scale research has been carried out, the evidence is much stronger.
